This is just a few things that I consistently note is missing for new Youtubers who are asking for criticism. This is what I have seen has been effective!

You Homepage/User Page
The second thing people see after finding a video of yours they like, the presentation of your homepage can make or break someone hitting subscriber.

Things to Include:
  • Custom banner with your name and Logo.
  • Channel Trailer that catches the eye
  • Customized front with Play Lists (ex: Game Reviews, Let's Plays, News) that guide
  • Links to active social media.
Things to Exclude:

  • No Content
  • Uploads, Favorite Videos Only
  • Dead Social Media

Your Videos
Videos are what we are here for and all about - most of us anyway. This is what ultimately makes or breaks if you have a subscriber.

Things to Include:
  • Good Microphone Quality - Arguably more important then good Video. Youtube is more an Audio medium as people will often multi task and not even look at the screen.
  • Good Video Quality - You don't have to have the best camera, but something HD that is clear with good lighting.
  • Call to Action: DO THIS! No seriously, every video should have 'Don't forget to Like, Comment, and subscribe!' in the first 10 seconds of the video and the last 10 seconds.
  • Upload your own content. Seriously, don't just upload footage of something. Put your spin on it.. Or just upload original stuff!
  • Thumbnails: Thumbnails are vital. Alot of succesful Thumbnails use borders as well as eye catching visuals.
  • Tags: Appropriately tag your stuff. Youtube looks at those tags and puts it in searching criteria. Ultimately, your videos will be most seen by people who do video searches. Use Google Search, Youtube Search, Ad word Search, and anything else to appropriately tag your videos.
Things to Exclude:

Damn Daniel Videos.. Did I mention I hate these videos?
  • Damn Daniel Videos.. Seriously.. I hate Damn Daniel Videos.. I HATE THEM
  • Copyright Material with no fair use. Need I say more?
TOS violations.. Porn.. etc.
I did try to be somewhat exhaustive here, but It is by far not complete. These are just some of the common thigns I have seen (Sans the porn.. yet) that newbies do. I hope it helps!

Damn Daniel.... Just kidding. Nice guide, man... I have some trouble growing recently. I make high quality thumbnails, videos, I have a good microphone and I am active on Twitter. I pretty much follow your guidelines for a long time, but why do I not keep growing? Any tips?

I wonder why people ask for channel reviews, when they lack a banner, profile picture, channel trailer, or thumbnails in general. It should be common knowledge when they look at other channels. But I'm happy that they can actively look for more help though. Hopefully more people take guides seriously ^^

Good thing so far, but not yet the "Ultimate" Guide as you tagged it, that would include much more in-depth stuff imho.
Like: Using Cards (Annotations), Collabs and so on.

But definately worth a look for newer ones :).
