I heard about the 10k views thing as a requirement for monitization. Is that true??
Yes it is true you will no longer be able to monetise content if you have under 10K views, even if your in a partnership at the time. Also YouTube is also cracking down on advertiser friendly content, and as such you may see more channels being terminated / denied than before.

Way I see it, you only really need to bother about YouTube monetization when you're getting the amount of revenue that can support certain investments like savings for a new setup or whatever. If you're small as 'THENigeliam' said, you're basically not really earning a wage from it anyway, so just focus on making your content for you and because you enjoy supplying videos to your subscribers, and hopefully with a lot of hard work, commitment and determination, you'll get to the point where you can then worry about monetization on your channel. Do YouTube for YOU, not for the money. :)
