You shouldn't focus on donations, streaming with Twitch is more about getting your followers up. Most donations come randomly, and they are only $5 or $10 at max.
Before focusing on earning enough money, get your viewer base up, get to know your viewers, interact with them so you form a sort of friendship bond, then they might come back to find out how you are doing and what you are up to.

Basically, unless you are fairly popular, donations are not going to be often, if ever.
