You will need an active monetisation account (adsense) in order to join the Freedom network so yes. Though once you link with Freedom you can then ignore your adsense account as all earnings will be handled by Freedom

Just to add to the above, in regards to using adsense and being with freedom!.

Yes you can continue to use adsense for things such as website revenue. The only part of adsense that would no longer be used is the YouTube monetization, that would be handled by Freedom!.
